They're an odd couple in every sense but a monkey and a pigeon have become inseparable at an animal sanctuary in China. The 12-week-old macaque - who was abandoned by his mother - was close to death when it was rescued on Neilingding Island, in Goangdong Province.

After being taken to an animal hospital his health began to improve but he seemed spiritless - until he developed a friendship with a white pigeon. The blossoming relationship helped to revive the macaque who has developed a new lease of life, say staff at the sanctuary.

I will try and post three cool websites each month. Here's September's three cool websites, just click on the website's name to see it:

1) Ethiopia Reads -- Inspiring, this is about a children's librarian from Ethiopia that brings children's books to Ethiopian children. He has a M.A. in library science and worked as a public librarian. He is bringing books like Berestein Bears, Curious George, Goodnight Moon to children who otherwise would never read these books. His library started as a wooden cart pulled by a donkey and has grown to a building. Some of these children didn't even know what a library was! Check out his organization and turn the sound up to hear his story.

2) Semi-Homemade --Who doesn't want to cheat a little when cooking. I rarely make anything from scratch, that's the city girl in me. Find out great easy recipes, crafts and clever home decor.

3) Do It Yourself (DIY)--This is a website I always take patrons to when they need to know how to do a simple home repair. I use it myself, and Joe has used it too. I think we hung our chandelier in our dining room with instructions from DIY.

A little thing called Empathy

This morning, Newton growled at and nipped at Annie for trying to steal her rawhide. I was in my office, trying to get some writing done. I am submitting an article about pit bulls and the art of humanity to our local IndyTails newspaper. I know their publication, and if I can get something in by deadline, they may consider my submission. I am trying to do some freelance work again, and sometimes a place really likes what I write and may make room for it. What I have been thinking about is pit bulls beacuse of the Michael Vick situation,
I really want to share it. Because pit bulls get a bad wrap all the time. What happened this morning remided me of what is lacking in the Vick case. What is lacking is empathy. This term has been weighing on my mind for the past couple of weeks along with it's companion--which is patience. This morning, Newton nipped at Annie's ear and barked really loudly in her face to lay off the rawhide, I hear alot of running around upstairs. Then I hear Annie whimpering loudly so I went upstairs to find Annie under our bed shaking uncontrollably. I got on my hands and knees and peeked under the bed and made some little thumping noises on our floor. Annie comes back out and crawls in my lap, where I pet her and calm her down. After that, I take the rawhide away from Newton. This little scenario has helped me with my article I am writing. Because I think many of these dogs (like the ones in Mike Vick's case) are lacking any empathy from their so called owner. I am just learning how important empathy is and how it can be hard to grasp.

When was the last time you felt like hiding under the bed? When you felt like this, was there someone there to listen and empathize with your feelings? Did you feel better afterwards, did you feel more relaxed? We are not small enough to crawl into someone's lap like Annie, but we do need empathy. So I found the angle to my article, and hopefully they will take my submission. I became really interested in this feeling of empathy--so I googled it. Did you know that empathy can't always be taught, it is a pathos that we have in us as humans. Empathy comes more easily to others. What I found interesting is empathy is something doctors struggle with--they actually study empathy in medical school. It doesn't surprise me that empathy is a hard thing for medical students to grasp. In my experience, more scientific people tend to look for solutions and lean on the technical side of life. One thing about empathy is it has two companions: patience and nurturing. This is what I think mothers learn, they know the secret to true empathy. If I am ever blessed to have a child, I hope that secret comes to me.

So in retrospect, I guess Empathy is not such a little thing. Annie is relaxed now, and so am I. I am not stuck on what I am writing anymore, my little muse is now asleep at my feet.

We watched Larry the Cable Guy movie--he is the redneck comedian who says Git R Done all the time--what a dumb movie.
I like My Name is Earl because the writers take redneck humor and make it more intelligent
and actually witty.

Trader Joe's 101

In an effort to eat better I decided to go to the northside to Trader Joe to get some groceries. I also went out with Rachel. This was on Saturday after work. Rachel has lost alot of weight on Weight Watchers and she looks good, so she was a big help on showing me what food was good and what food only looked good for me.
Here's what I got.

Organic Food Review:

Herb and Goat Cheese Potato Chips-- These tasted okay, but they are high in fat. If anyone ever finds a potato chip that isn't full of fat and tastes good ( not light Lays) please let me know.

Cinnamon almonds- Very good, they are sweet. These will make for great little servings of protein. But I think I could make a even lower fat version of these at home.

Frozen asparagus

Frozen tiny peas--These peas are very cute

Frozen artichoke hearts

Greek yogurt-more calcium and very good with just a pinch of honey

Grilled chicken tenders

Spinach and tomato chicken sauce--only 80 calories, Rachel said this is good if you need a tiny kick, use half the serving to make it 40 calories.

Jasmine rice

Chicken Lime patties- These are pre-made ground chicken patties

Chicken tamales- One serving is low in calories, Rachel said that one tamale will provide good protein. Also, getting a tamale instead of having a flour tortilla saves you from extra starch.

Trader Joe's 100 Mango and Orange Juice-Rachel pointed out to me that it was 100% juice and sugar was not in the first five ingredients.

I got all this for $25. That combined with other stuff makes for at least 10 different meals. Trader Joe's is probably
one of the more economical organic food stores.

Joe said he will try all these things, I feel good. I had the yogurt for breakfast and it was good.
